Mastery needs a framework to set context

There are so many strategies and tips for managing stress. This leaves you with the challenge of how do they all fit together? Here is a simple framework to help you think through what options you may want to take to get stress relief.

A few years ago, I found myself grappling with stress on multiple fronts. In my quest for solutions, I encountered various fragmented answers that failed to provide the coherent narrative or framework I sought. Fueled by this dissatisfaction, I embarked on the journey to develop a comprehensive framework for understanding and effectively responding to stress.

The Framework: Creators and Removers

Stress, stemming from unpredictable events that can last a moment or endure for decades, manifests in various aspects of life such as money, relationships, and work—let's term them as stress "creators." On the other hand, behaviours, environments, and practices like exercise, meditation, and stress defence techniques act as stress "removers."

While my background is in engineering, and I acknowledge the non-scientific nature of this framework, its simplicity and insightful approach align with the principles of great engineering. Mastery over stress, I contend, necessitates two key elements: resilience, or the capacity to absorb stressful surprises, and the ability to remove stress faster than it accumulates.

Two Simple Rules for Stress Mastery:

1. Stress creators minus stress removers results in stored stress.

Creators - Removers = Stored Stress

2. Maximum stress capacity (the point of potential breakdown) minus stored stress results in the capacity to absorb stress (resilience).

Maximum Stress - Stored Stress = Capacity to Absorb Stress (Resilience).

Conclusions: The Holistic Approach

These rules lead to two crucial conclusions. Firstly, the ability to remove stress must outweigh both the creators of stress and the stored stress itself—operating effectively in the immediate and long term. Secondly, the connection between resilience and stored stress underscores the importance of enhancing stress removers.

Contrary to common advice that often focuses solely on eliminating the causes of stress, my approach recognizes the limitations of such a strategy. Events causing stress are often beyond our control.

At Feeling Fitness, we adopt a comprehensive strategy to assist clients in:

  1. Reducing their stress creators.

  2. Mitigating their stored stress.

  3. Enhancing their stress removers.

  4. Building their capacity to handle stress (resilience).

By addressing these four pillars, clients not only gain skills to manage stress in the moment but also grow their capacity to handle stress in general.

In conclusion, this framework provides a holistic and practical guide for people seeking to master stress in real-life scenarios. While understanding the framework is the first step, implementing this framework into my life took years. If you are interested in feeling the benefits of a calmer lower stress life, I would love to save you some time.
